Illustrator 10 Gradient Text

In Illustrator 10, by default, when text is filled with a gradient, it will fill each letter separately.

I like one smooth gradient fill:

In Illustrator 10, add a text block on the canvas.
Select text and choose Type>Create Outlines
Create or select a gradient for fill.
Using the Gradient Tool, drag across text box. This will apply the gradient throughout the full text block.
