A couple of months ago, I noticed that Netvibes, my custom homepage, offered an add-on module for box.net. I registered for a the free account which offered 1gb of web storage space. Pretty good! The netvibes module made it easy to access and upload files, so I played around with the account a little, but was a little uneasy with the security.
I felt more comfortable when I found out that box.net offered a 128bit security when logging in on https://www.box.net.
Tonight, I found a great tutorial for Mac users to mount their box.net account in Finder. Check out the tutorial at Uneasy Silence.
I tested it and it works very well. The only difference was I didn’t find a “dav” desktop icon, but it was very easy to log in again using the Go Menu from Finder. I saved the box.net address to my Connect to Server favorites.

Update: It appears that larger files (huge 100+mb files) are difficult to transfer to box.net account. I am not sure if it is my ISP, box.net, or something else. Smaller files work better, and multiple files work fine as well.
Great tip. I had heard of box.net but never played around with it. I guess it’s time to give it a try.

I remember we had discussed using Gmail for file storage, and I think box.net is the next best thing. It isn’t as large as a gmail account, but it is better (for me at least) than buying a .Mac account.
Comment by debbieT on June 7th, 2006I’ve been only keeping my .Mac really for syncing between my work and home computers but it looks like there are some shareware apps now that do .Mac style syncing. I am definitely under-utilizing .Mac (and it ain’t cheap : ) )
Comment by Steve on June 7th, 2006By shareware apps, do you mean ChronoSync? Oh boy, do I love that app! I think it is in my top 5!
Comment by debbieT on June 7th, 2006I was actually thinking along the lines of ‘MySync’ - http://www.mildmanneredjanitor.com/mysync/index.html - I just haven’t had a lot of time to test it out.
I guess you can use ChronoSynce to copy just the iCal and Adress Book data from one computer to the other. CS is an awesome backup application (yeah I know it does more then that).
